OLWG #203- After the Manoeuvring Watch

This week’s prompts are at the bottom. Feel free to seize the prompts, twist them, form them, play with them as you will. All comers are welcome. The words below are just practice for me. I had a lot of fun writing them and, practice makes perfect.

Here’s how to play along, if you are unsure.

The alarm sounds before the announcement repeats, “Dive, Dive” for the second time. It echoes softly through the boat from the 1MC speakers.

Eavesdropping on Control, through the 7MC, I hear an order to proceed to a depth of 120 feet / three degree down bubble.

Control gets to work; Sonar gets busy. I begin to relax.

When #2 scope dips below the surface… when it is lowered and secured- the motion of the boat settles down. I check the time (mentally shifting to GMT from Hawaii-Aleutian Time) and leave ESM, heading for Control. Not yet rigged for red.

Almost time to plot SINS errors.

Shoot the shit with the QMOW.

Find out what’s supposed to happen over the next six hours.

I check the readings on CAMS.

I stick my head into Radio; for a quick word with DB and Bad Bob

I pause and peruse the POD at the forward end of the passageway, turn to port, take

three steps and collapse onto the stool outboard the binnacle

I carry a Line Handler’s knife in my hip pocket. It has a four-inch Sheepsfoot blade and a marlinspike.

This week’s prompts are:

  1. smiling in the sun
  2. bread and morphine
  3. clouds of feathers

You can start writing whenever you want, just write, get the words down – and have fun!
